CATHERINE THE GREAT:
Catherine II of Russia was one of the most influential leaders of all time, ruling from 1762 until her death in 1796. After her husband was assassinated, she assumed his role and became the undisputed matriarch of Russia, which flourished under her leadership. Not only was she a skilled diplomat, but a patron of the arts as well, instituting The Hermitage Museum, which still exists today in the Winter Palace.
