Considered one of North America's first Prima Ballerinas, Elizabeth Marie Tallchief was the first Native American ballerina to receive national attention. Performing for companies such as the New York City Ballet and the American Ballet Theater, Tallchief made a name for herself as a highly skilled performer. After retiring from the ballet, she became the director of the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
SAPPHO:
Born in the 600s BCE, Sappho was an ancient Greek poet and philosopher. She resided on the island of Lesbos, with her female companions. (The term "lesbian" is a derivative of "Lesbos".) Unfortunately, most of her work was lost over time, though her remaining poems continue to be admired by scholars and poets alike.
